SSL and MailNow! 5
This document explains how to import a certificate, how to create a self-signed cert, and how to use an imported cert to configure SSL for SMTP, POP3 and IMAP.
To configure SSL, you need to have an SSL certificate and the certificate must be imported. Note that you can use a real commercial certificate issued by a commercial Certificate Authority (CA) or you may use a self-signed certificate. MailNow! 5 even has the ability to create self-signed certificates which you can use to easily enable SSL.
1.1. How to import SSL certificate in MailNow! 5
- In the navigation menu on the left, click on System Setting | Security | Certificates

If you already have a certificate imported it will be shown on the right.
To import a certificate click on the Import menu which is circled in red in Screen shot 2.0. An import SSL Certificate dialog box will appear as shown in Screen shot 3.0.

- Click “Select” to find your .pfx1 file which contains the certificate.
- Provide the certificate’s password, then click on the “Import” button. You will come back to the same window like the one shown in Screenshot 2.0. Here, now you can see the detail of your certificate which you have imported just now.
- Remember to save your changes by clicking on “Save”.

1.2. How to generate SSL certificate in MailNow! 5
- Go to System Settings | Security | Certificates.
- Click on “Generate” which is circled in red in Screen shot 4.0

- The Generate SSL Certificate dialog box will appear as shown in Screenshot 5.0
- Complete the fields by providing the relevant details.
o You may give any name for the Certificate filename.
o The Issued To field should be your company name.
o The Password field will be the password that will be used to protect the generated certificate.
Keep this password safe as you might need to use it in the future.
o The Valid To date is the expiry date of this certificate. By default MailNow! sets it to 10 years from the current date.
- Finally click on the “Generate” button to complete generating your own self-signed SSL certificate.
- Once you have done so you will be back to the similar window shown in Screenshot 4.0 where your newly generated certificate will be listed in detail.
- Remember to save your changes before you browse to other window by clicking on the Save menu.

1.3. How to enable SSL in MailNow! 5.
- Go to System Setting | SMTP In | SMTP Server (circled in Screenshot 6.0).

- Click Add New and you will end up with Add SSL Configuration dialog (See Screenshot 8.0)

- Specify the IP address where you would like your SSL SMTP server to listen on. You should pick an IP address that your users will be connecting to. The Port value will be set automatically to 465. You may change this port number if you do not wish to use the default port for SSL SMTP. In the Certificate field you will see all the certificates have been imported into MailNow! 5, before.
- Choose the certificate that you would like to use.
Note:
If you do not see the certificate that you want to use, you need to import the certificate first. You may need to refer section 1.1. How to import SSL certificate in MailNow! 5 above.

- Click OK and you will be back to similar window shown in Screenshot 7.0, where recent configuration of SSL will be displayed in detail.
- Remember to click “Save” to store your changes.
- Wait until “System’s SMTP Server Setting updated” message appears. Click OK.

- Restart the MailNow! Service so that this new change will take into effect.
